Love   (excerpt from Guidelights)

What is this goodness that lies within each of us? It is love, which is accompanied by unselfishness, forgiveness, and humility. It is unconditional and universal love. Love for all others, without regard to the usual boundaries. Most of us love certain people in our lives, but for most, this love does not extend to all. The boundaries may encompass only our spouse, our spouse and children, our family, our family and friends, or our family, friends, and community. The pure goodness of which we are all capable, the Good, is universal love.

Love is identification with others. It is an expansion of the self. If others meet with good fortune, one who loves experiences happiness. If others meet with misfortune, one who loves feels sadness. Identification with others, or empathy, extends the self and creates concern for the well being of those others. One who has come to love all others possesses concern for the well being of all others. This love is profound inner beauty and it is joy.
